Robert Scot’s Draped Bust silver dollar represents the ambition of the young United States Mint, capturing the federal neoclassical aesthetic of the late 1790s. The year 1798 marked a significant transition, introducing the Heraldic Eagle reverse to replace the earlier Small Eagle design. This bold new motif, adapted from the Great Seal, projected a confident nation on the global stage.
This particular 1798 specimen, classified as the B-31, BB-113 variety, has survived in About Uncirculated condition. Finding early dollars at the AU50 level is a challenge; most of these heavy silver pieces saw active commerce and wore down to flat, slick surfaces. At this grade, the coin retains its original design details, from the individual strands of Liberty's hair to the feathers of the shield.
