1847 Braided Hair N-14
About This Coin
Christian Gobrecht’s Braided Hair design marked the final chapter for the classic heavy copper cent. Introduced in the late 1830s and refined throughout the 1840s, Liberty’s coronet portrait brought a calm, neoclassical dignity to a denomination that did the heavy lifting in everyday antebellum commerce.
The 1847 issue, represented here by the Newcomb-14 die pairing, remains an enduring favorite among late-date specialists. The vast majority of these coppers saw punishing circulation, emerging from trade with substantial wear and planchet marks. True Mint State survivors are a distinct minority, and this piece offers genuine uncirculated preservation at the MS62 grade, reinforced by CAC approval.
It is an honest, properly preserved antebellum cent with verified die-variety pedigree—an appealing acquisition for a focused large cent study or a discerning 19th-century type set.
