About This Coin
Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Seated motif served as the visual foundation of American silver for more than half a century. Struck in Philadelphia during the uneasy years just prior to the Civil War, the 1858 half dollar represents the design in its mature, no-motto form, produced during a time when silver was workaday currency rather than an object of numismatic preservation.
Finding antebellum Seated half dollars in Gem Uncirculated condition is an elusive pursuit. Most encountered today are well-worn or long ago fell victim to wartime melting, making premium Mint State survivors true condition rarities.
Certified MS 65 by NGC and confirmed by CAC, this coin occupies a level of preservation rarely seen for the date. It is a quiet, commanding representative of pre-war American coinage, suited for a discerning type set or advanced Seated collection.
