About This Coin

Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Seated half dollar was the workhorse of American commerce for over half a century. By 1877, this classic design was nearing its twilight. This year marked the Philadelphia Mint's final large-scale production of the denomination, as the introduction of the Morgan silver dollar the following year would soon redirect the mint's primary resources.

While the 1877 is obtainable in circulated grades, it becomes a formidable condition rarity above the Gem threshold. This PCGS MS66+ example, secured by a green CAC sticker, is an exceptional survivor. It features booming luster, expertly preserved surfaces, original skin, and vibrant color—attributes rarely seen on an issue that so often suffered from indifferent handling.

For the advanced cabinet, a Seated half dollar of this caliber represents a peak achievement. It offers the discerning collector a virtually unimpeachable representative of Gobrecht's design from the final years of its major production.
