Modern Commemoratives
Following a 28-year hiatus after 1954, the U.S. Mint revived its commemorative coin program in 1982 with the George Washington half dollar. Modern commemoratives are struck in silver and gold, and occasionally clad, to honor modern events, national monuments, and historic figures. Surcharges on these coins directly fund the preservation of American heritage.

Most modern commemoratives were sold directly to collectors, resulting in high survival rates. However, certain low-mintage issues (such as the 1996 Smithsonian gold $5 or the 1997 Jackie Robinson $5) are key dates that command premium prices.
Grading Guidelines
Since modern commemoratives are sold in pristine condition, most certified examples grade Mint State 69 or 70, or Proof 69 or 70. Graders verify the absolute absence of microscopic hairline scratches or planchet marks to award the perfect 70 grade.
