Struck from 1854 to 1889, the three-dollar gold piece was authorized to make purchasing sheets of 100 three-cent postage stamps easier. It features a design depicting Liberty in an Indian headdress.

Mintages were generally low throughout the series. The 1870-S is a legendary rarity with only two known, while regular keys include the 1854-D, 1873, and 1875.
