Tokens & Medals
Historical tokens and medals represent the private and commemorative side of American numismatics. This includes Civil War tokens (issued by private merchants when government coins disappeared from circulation), Hard Times tokens (1837–1844 economic crisis), and medals struck by the U.S. Mint or private societies to honor historical events and figures.

The vast number of token varieties makes specialization highly rewarding. Rarity is determined by specific merchants or designs. Civil War Patriotic and Storecard tokens are highly sought after, with some rare merchant combinations being unique.
Grading Guidelines
Tokens and medals are graded on the Sheldon scale. Because they were struck by both professional and amateur mints, strike quality varies wildly. Graders look for original color (for copper tokens) and verify that details are not obscured by wear.
