Twenty Cent Pieces
The twenty-cent piece is one of the shortest-lived and most unusual denominations in U.S. mint history, struck for circulation only in 1875 and 1876, with proof-only issues in 1877 and 1878. It was introduced to address a shortage of small change in the West, but was quickly discontinued because the public constantly confused it with the quarter dollar due to its similar size and obverse Seated Liberty design.

The 1876-CC twenty-cent piece is one of the greatest rarities in American numismatics, with nearly the entire mintage of 10,000 melted before release (only about 20 specimens are known to exist). Business strikes from the San Francisco (S) and Carson City (CC) mints in 1875 are the most collectible.
Grading Guidelines
Twenty-cent pieces are graded based on the Seated Liberty design on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. Particular attention is paid to the word "LIBERTY" on the shield on the obverse, and the feathers on the eagle's breast on the reverse.
