Two Cent Pieces
Struck from 1864 to 1873, the two-cent piece holds a unique place in American history as the first U.S. coin to bear the motto "In God We Trust." Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin was minted in French bronze to alleviate coin shortages during the Civil War, but quickly fell out of favor once the war ended.

The 1864 Small Motto variety is the premier key of the series and commands a significant premium over the Large Motto. The 1872 is a scarce business strike, and the 1873 is a proof-only issue.
Grading Guidelines
Two-cent pieces are graded using standard guidelines for copper coins. Wear is first visible on the ribbon scroll containing the motto and the leaves of the wreath on the obverse. Original red (RD) and red-brown (RB) examples are highly prized.
