About This Coin
Robert Scot’s Flowing Hair motif served as the young republic’s first silver dollar, struck for just two years before being replaced late in 1795. The design remains one of the most evocative in American numismatics, capturing a fledgling federal mint working through the immense practical challenges of coining large silver planchets.
On the reverse, this piece represents the Three Leaves variety, identified by the foliage clustered beneath the eagle’s wings. Flowing Hair dollars almost universally saw heavy commercial use, and many survivors suffered harsh treatment over the ensuing centuries. At the Very Fine level, the primary devices remain well defined, showing the balanced, honest wear of genuine eighteenth-century circulation.
Bearing a green CAC sticker, this is a wholesome, thoroughly authentic representative of the nation's earliest federal silver. It is a foundational coin that brings quiet gravity to any serious collection of early American types.
