About This Coin

James B. Longacre’s Indian Head design, introduced on the eve of the Civil War, remains one of the most enduring icons of American copper coinage. By 1881, the design had matured into its classic bronze format, with the Philadelphia Mint striking a limited number of proof specimens annually for the era's small but dedicated collecting community.

This 1881 proof representative, graded Proof 64 Red and Brown by NGC, offers a superb balance of original mint color and natural, aged patina. Finding nineteenth-century proof copper that retains this degree of original red is always a challenge, as these delicate surfaces are highly sensitive to environmental exposure over the decades.

With the additional verification of a green CAC sticker, this piece stands as a choice, original survivor of a classic Victorian-era issue. It represents an excellent acquisition for the collector who values both technical preservation and the warm, authentic character of historic proof bronze.
