Small cents were introduced in 1856 to replace the large, unwieldy copper cents. Starting with the short-lived Flying Eagle cent and transitioning to the classic Indian Head design, the denomination is best known for the Lincoln cent, first minted in 1909 and still in production today.

Rarity & Key Dates
The 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent is the most famous penny in the world, followed by the 1914-D and various doubled die errors (like the 1955 Doubled Die). Cents are designated by color: Red (RD), Red-Brown (RB), or Brown (BN).
Grading Guidelines
Copper cents are graded not only on detail but also on their remaining original red luster. A "Red" (RD) designation means the coin retains 95% or more of its original mint color, while "Red-Brown" (RB) retains 5% to 95%.
