1904 Indian Head Cent
About This Coin
James B. Longacre’s Indian Head cent was nearing the end of its half-century run by 1904. First struck on the eve of the Civil War, the design had become an essential fixture of American commerce, depicting Liberty in a feathered headdress that defined late-nineteenth-century small change.
While turn-of-the-century Philadelphia cents are readily found in circulated grades, surviving examples that retain full, unbroken mint red are far less common. Copper is an active metal, and the vast majority mellowed into brown over the subsequent decades. Graded MS64RD by PCGS and verified by CAC, this piece offers the fresh, original surfaces of a coin that escaped circulation entirely.
It is a balanced, honest representative of late-series bronze—an ideal selection for a classic type set or a focused collection of Longacre’s work.
