1941 Walking Liberty Half Dollar (Proof) No AW
About This Coin
Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, introduced in 1916, remains a high-water mark of American numismatic sculpture. The Philadelphia Mint’s pre-war proof strikings, produced only from 1936 through 1942, rendered the composition with exceptional fidelity, offering collectors a pristine expression of Weinman's full sculptural relief.
Among these late classic proofs, the 1941 "No AW" is a celebrated specialty. The absent initials beneath the eagle’s right wing resulted from aggressive die polishing at the mint, which effaced the designer's monogram and created one of the few recognized varieties within the short pre-war proof run.
Certified PR66 by CACG, this coin survives in a state of preservation well beyond the typical mid-century survivor, many of which succumbed to improper handling or harsh storage over the generations. It is an elevated, distinctively historic half dollar that neatly bridges the gap between classic artistry and die-variety connoisseurship.
