The Iowa Centennial half dollar, designed by Mint Engraver John R. Sinnock, was struck in 1946 to celebrate a century of statehood. Featuring the Old Stone Capitol at Iowa City on the obverse and the state seal on the reverse, the issue represents one of the final classic United States commemorative designs before the long hiatus that began in the 1950s.
While many of these coins were saved locally as souvenirs, finding specimens that escaped improper handling and sliding in original cardboard holders is a challenge.
