Half Dimes
The half dime (originally spelled "half disme" in 1792) was one of the original silver denominations authorized by the Mint Act of 1792. These tiny silver coins were struck until 1873, when the nickel five-cent piece fully replaced them. The denomination features historic Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust, and Seated Liberty designs.

The 1792 half disme is a legendary American treasure, rumored to have been struck from George and Martha Washington's personal silverware. Across the rest of the series, early dates (pre-1837) are very scarce, and Seated Liberty issues have numerous key dates and die varieties.
Grading Guidelines
Due to their small size, half dimes are easily damaged. Graders inspect the obverse portrait lines and the letters of the legend. For Seated Liberty issues, wear is checked on Liberty's knees, breast, and the central letters of the word "LIBERTY" on the shield.
