Denomination Overview

Trade Dollars

Struck from 1873 to 1885, the Trade Dollar was designed specifically for trade in East Asia to compete with the popular Spanish dollar and Mexican peso. It is unique in U.S. history as the only coin ever officially demonetized by Congress, which occurred after drop-off in silver values led to domestic circulation at a discount.

Rarity & Key Dates

Proof-only dates (1879–1885) are major rarities; business strikes are generally available but many bear "chopmarks" — stamped symbols by Chinese merchants verifying the coin's silver purity, which tell a unique historical story.

Grading Guidelines

Trade dollars are graded on the standard Sheldon scale. Chopmarked examples are graded details-certified by PCGS and NGC, while clean, un-chopmarked specimens in Mint State are highly prized by series specialists.
