The reduced-diameter Capped Bust quarters of the 1830s represent a transitional era in US Mint history. Designed by John Reich and modified by Chief Engraver William Kneass to accommodate close-collar technology, these pieces brought a refined execution to federal silver. They represent the final decade of the classic early American bust style.
This 1834 issue is a quintessential representative of the type. While most bust quarters saw heavy circulation and survived only in lower grades, this PCGS-graded XF40 example offers a far higher level of preservation. The green CAC sticker speaks to its outstanding originality, confirming that its surfaces have escaped the cleaning and abuse that befell so many of its contemporaries.
