About This Coin

Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head half eagle, introduced in 1839, served as a workhorse of American commerce for nearly seventy years. Its Neoclassical design captured the aesthetic of a young nation finding its footing, and these pre-Civil War issues represent the series at its most historic.

This 1856 Philadelphia Mint issue is a classic example of mid-century gold. While circulated specimens are occasionally encountered, Mint State examples of this date are genuinely scarce. Graded MS61 by NGC, this coin is notably lustrous, retaining a brightness that was almost always lost to decades of heavy commercial use.

The green CAC sticker on this holder confirms its exceptional quality for the assigned grade. Finding a pre-Civil War half eagle that has escaped both circulation and later cleaning is a difficult task for the specialist. This verified survivor represents an excellent opportunity for the collector seeking an honest, high-grade representative of early American gold.
