Bela Lyon Pratt’s revolutionary incuse design for the Indian Head half eagle remains one of the most distinctive achievements in American numismatics. By sinking the devices below the flat fields, Pratt created a coin that defied centuries of minting tradition, though the flat surfaces proved highly susceptible to contact marks in commerce.
This 1913 issue represents a challenging pre-war date that is notoriously difficult to find in choice Mint State. Because the recessed design offered no protective rim for the fields, surviving specimens are almost always marred by distracting scuffs. To find a 1913 graded MS64+ by NGC, and further verified with a green CAC sticker, indicates a level of preservation that is exceptionally rare for the type.
