1873 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle Closed 3
About This Coin
Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head quarter eagle was the enduring workhorse of nineteenth-century American gold, struck with remarkable consistency across nearly seven decades. By 1873, the design was well into its middle era, though the year brought an unexpected wrinkle: complaints that the digit 3 on early dies looked too much like an 8. That initial logotype yielded the Closed 3 variety, a distinctive piece of Mint operational history from a pivotal transitional decade.
Like many Philadelphia gold issues of the 1870s, the 1873 quarter eagle did not enjoy quiet retirement in vaults; most entered everyday commerce or met the crucible. Mint State survivors are undeniably scarce, with the vast majority of known specimens confined to lower, circulated grades. At MS62+, certified by CACG, this piece represents a genuine uncirculated survivor of a classic post-Civil War date, offering integrity and historical depth to any advanced gold cabinet.
