Beautiful toning

About This Coin

Charles E. Barber’s neoclassical design debuted in 1892, replacing the long-running Seated Liberty motif with a stoic, Roman-inspired bust. As the first year of the new type, the 1892 quarter represents a major design transition at the turn of the century. It remains a foundational acquisition for any serious type set.

This choice Mint State 64 example, certified by CACG, displays beautiful toning that highlights the crispness of Barber’s original hubs. Finding first-year issues with this level of original preservation is challenging. While the public saved them as novelties, very few escaped the friction of light handling to remain in true select uncirculated condition.

For the collector seeking a representative example of the inaugural Barber quarter, this piece offers a compelling blend of historical significance and outstanding eye appeal. It is a sophisticated addition to a high-grade cabinet.

Series History & Details

Designed by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, the Barber Quarter was struck from 1892 to 1916. Sharing its obverse with the dime and half dollar, it served as a workhorse of American commerce at the turn of the 20th century.
